Heroes from the Events & Tourism Industry

April 16, 2020 Clare McVay

In the midst of all this uncertainty and pain caused by COVID-19, people are pulling-together to do good, supporting neighbours, charities and the NHS.

Many of these surprising heroes have appeared in our own industry. Most of these businesses have been hit hard by the pandemic, with no clients for the near future. But despite this, they are busying themselves to help others during this crisis. At K&N Travel we’d like to take a moment to shout out to some of our favourite venues and suppliers and thank them for their selflessness. There will be many more which we don’t mention, but feel free to comment and spread the word. Thanks to everyone doing their bit!

Pickering’s Gin

Throughout the UK, gin and whisky distillers have almost overnight switched to producing hand-sanitiser.  One of these is Pickering’s Gin distillery, Edinburgh’s 1st exclusive gin distillery in over 150 yrs. The small batch gin is normally handcrafted at Summerhall Distillery and popular at bars throughout the UK and abroad. They also run great tastings and tours. But from late March they switched to the production of hand sanitising spray for frontline services. Cheers to that!

Claridge’s

With guests no longer able to stay, most hotels have had to shut up shop for now. However, a small army of almost 200 hotels throughout the UK have been able to make over 20,000 beds available NHS staff and other key workers. One of these is the prestigious Claridge’s Hotel in Paddington. Rooms there can often cost £650 a night but are now being offered to those working on the frontline and most in need of some comfort!

ExCel London

In an amazing effort, the team at ExCel and an army of volunteers transformed this impressive conference venue into the Nightingale Hospital London. With 500 beds equipped with ventilators and oxygen, it’s helping take some of the strain off the capital’s established hospitals. It’s not the only conference centre to do so, with similar operations in place from Glasgow to Manchester.

There are many more fantastic venues and services stepping-up to help. Too many to mention, but we want to say thank you to them all. We’re proud to be part of such a caring industry!
